Eisner, Susan P. Managing Generation Y 70.4 (2005). Print
This article is about our generation Y, which analysis three main topics, how our generation is the "echo" boomers, the conflict of generations, and human resource management. With the entry of Generation Y to the working world, the workforce for the first time contains four generations. It covers the idea of how generation Y

are considered to be echo boomers, the internet technology junkies. The article

first starts off with and introduction of what the main focuses are and how we

relate to past generations. After reading the print I came to realize the main

topic of the essay is the conflict of generations. This paper, seeks to present

winning strategies for managing intergenerational implications of Gen Y's entrance

to the workplace  The writer first seeks to explain on how past generations are

having trouble being able to mix with generation Y. It describes the coexistence

of age-diverse workers in a transitioning workplace. Considering generation Y in

the work force the author talks about how in the they are considered to dislike

authoritarianism and laziness. The paper compares generation Y to generation X by

stating that gen X is the child workoholic of baby boomers. Also that generation X

tends not to have strong social skills like generation Y, but do have strong

technology skills. Generation X tends to be outcome-focused and seeks specific

constructive feed back unlike generation Y.

Generation Y is considered as the most technically literate, educated, and

ethnically diverse generation in history. Overall, Gen Y is inclined to be

positive, polite, curious, energetic, and respectful of its parents and

grandparents. Making a lot of money tends to be less important to Generation Y

than contributing to society, parenting well, and enjoying a full and balanced

life. The author states that a recent study found that Generation Y is consuming

31 hours of media in a 24 hour time frame through multi-tasking. This is true

because generation Y is used to a fast passed world with all technology and

information at hand 24/7.

In the work force, Generation Y tends to favor an inclusive style of

management, dislike slowness, and desire immediate feedback about performance.

Technically able, highly informed and confident, but lacking direction, Generation Y is more

likely to "rock the boat" than any prior generation. The write states Some of Generation Y's

characteristics may make it easier to manage than Generation X. Generation Y tends to value

teamwork and fairness and is likely to be more positive than Gen X on a range of workplace

issues including work-life balance, performance reviews. At the same time, Gen Y's entrance to

the workforce seems to present some challenges. Although Gen Y workers tend to be more

positive than Gen X about working in general, Gen Y tends to be less satisfied than Gen X with

their jobs and employers.  Compared with other generations, Generation Y tends to have less

respect for rank and more respect for ability and accomplishment.

Some key points that have good relation with this article is when the writer talks

about how other generations are have trouble working with generation Y. Because generation X

and generation Y are so much different than each other. Generation Y is considered to be very

sociable compared to generation X he did not grow up with all the "social" websites and did

not have cell phones or txting which keeps them in contact 24/7. Generation X does have a

better understand on what it means to want something and achieving it rather then generation Y

expecting everything to be given to them. I can relate to this because me being part of

generation Y we did have a way easier childhood than generation X did. We were born into a

world that has everything planned out for us. Another key point is how a recent study showed

how we are capable of 31 hours of information in a 24 hour time frame. This is possible

because we were born into a world of technology. In general most people in generation Y had a

cell phone and internet access from the age of ten years old. All of these things make a more

fast passed world which generation Y is accustomed to living in; compared to the past

generations that did not have these things.

I chose this article because it was very interesting how in depth it went on

generations stronge points and bad points concerning the work force. The writer did this very

well by comparing generation Y to generation X strong and weak points. I wanted to learn on

how our generation is doing joining a work force that is filled with the past 3 generations.

From here i could implicate these points of generation Y and generation X into my paper

because its a very indomitable subject concerning our countries generations. Also, that it is

very relevant because this is the time were most of our generation is joining our countries

work force.
