Generation Y blog 2

Armour, Stephanie. "They've Arrived at Work with a New Attitude." USA Today. Web. 10 Oct. 2011.        <http://www.riverregionchamber.net/AboutChamber/Media/GenerationY.pdf>.

First, The author goes over on who she thinks generation why is and how they are coming into this world. She goes into how there is no consensus over the exact birth dates that define Gen Y, also known by some as echo boomers and millennials.  She states that more than 70 million Generation  Y Americans born 1977 to 2002. The author then goes into our numbers in the workforce, Gen Y would be the fastest-growing segment of the workforce. Growing from 14% of the workforce to 21% over the past four years to nearly 32 million workers. She then goes into our attributes and overall thoughts as a generation. High expectations of ourselves, that we aim to work faster and better than other workers, that we have high expectations of employers, we want fair and direct managers who are highly engaged in their professional development. How we want ongoing learning, that we seek out creative challenges and view colleagues as resources from whom to gain knowledge. Our immediate responsibility, we want to make an important impact on day 1. Also, how we aregoal-oriented, we want small goals with tight deadlines so they can build up ownership of tasks. She goes into our financial smarts. She states, "After witnessing the financial insecurity that beset earlier generations stung by layoffs and the dot-com bust, today's newest entrants into the workforce are generally savvy when it comes to money and savings. They care about such benefits as 401(k) retirement plans." She goes into how we always want change, that generation Yers don't expect to stay in a job, or even a career, for too long. We have seen the scandals that happened in the past and we are skeptical when it comes to such concepts as employee loyalty. We have conflicts when it comes to business attire, how we want to casually dress. As a generation used to casual fare such as flip-flops, tattoos and capri pants, and need to learn
more traditional attire is required at the office. She further more goes into the perks of our generation Y's recruitment into the work place. For example, Xerox is stepping up recruitment of students at "core colleges," which is how the company refers to universities that have the kind of talent Xerox needs. That our generation is way more user friendly to technology than any other past generation.
I thought there were many key phrases and points through out this article. When the author went into how our generation is the smartest generation with technology, and how it is having a big impact on the work force. This is true because we were born into a world that was based of technology. We grew up with many things and opportunities through technology that past generations did not have. When she goes into our attributes and overall thoughts as a generation I though was very key to the focus of her paper. We are bringing many new motivational thoughts and actions to this new age work force.
I chose this article because it was yet another article that had many thoughts about our generation entering the work force. It has many points that contradict other article that I have been through. It is a good atricle to use in my paper because it has many points that go against other authors points in there article's about our generation joining today's workforce. Overall, this article will be very key for me to prove that some points being made about my generation Yer's are false and that we have many positive things to bring to the work force today, but also things that we need to fix.

Generation Y blog 4

Sujaski, Joanne. "Leading a Multi-Generational Workforce." Comprehensive Employee Assessments by Key Group. KEYgroup, 2008. Web. 18 Oct. 2011. <http://www.keygroupconsulting.com/>.

The author did a very good job on letting the readers know what the paper was going to be about. In the beginning of the article the author has a brief summary how what he is going to talk about, Also, he has a he gets into how generation Y, is entering the workforce since 1998 and will continue to do so in burgeoning numbers. He gives a overview on how four generations are going to react in the work place together if this is going to be a pain of a transition. Next, the author gives a big over view of on all four past generations. He does this by  pointing out how particular generations and how they grew up with their different, culture and values on life. Also, he goes into to detail about what each generation has to give, their strong points, and positive points because each generation grew up in completly different times.
He next goes into how gen Y and gen X  while different, Gen X and Gen Y have some similarities. Both will demand a more innovative workplace, with flexible hours, state-of-the-art resources, cooperative scheduling, and understanding supervisors. They will continue to negotiate a work-life balance. He then goes into offering training opportunities to retain employees of all generations, it is important to appeal to their desire to learn. To emphasize career growth, paid training, and skill development a dynamic workplace
because the incoming group of gen Y employees will be so large, the workplace will have to change to
accommodate their unique attributes. He further more goes into that they how businesses will have to be creative in developing new motivational techniques if they want to retain their employees and to obtain the highest performance and output. Another point the author makes is how why to build a successful multi-generational environment. To enhance the work environment,  and to recognize that these groups will have different perspectives, and respect that they differ in the view of the world. The writer thinks doing all of these things will support positive relationships among all employees and go a long way toward retaining your best team members. Then there's a paragraph about the other " Dr. Joanne Sujansky, CSP, has over 25 years of experience helping leaders increase organizational growth and profitability by creating and sustaining what she calls a “vibrant entrepreneurial organization.” She is an international keynote speaker, founder of KEYGroup® and the author of numerous books on leadership, change and retention. A
member of the National Speakers Association, she holds their highest earned designation, Certified Speaking
Professional.
There were many very validating points and predictions of how generation Y will in the force with the past three generation. One of the key concepts I thought was brought up was creating a dynamic workforce. Because of all the incoming group of generation Y employees will be so large, the workplace will have to change to accommodate their new attributes. They will have to be creative in developing new motivational techniques if they want to retain their employees and to obtain the highest performance and output possible. This is a very good point because work environment with problems within employee's will never end well. To be a good employee going into a new work force requires to be responsible. Another good point the author makes explaining how our generations was brought up.  Is how Gen Y was born between 1981 and 1999, which mean they grew up in a time of economic expansion, and until now have never experienced a downturn. Also, that those in this generation have seen more at an earlier age than most in previous generations. Exposure to these events through 24-hour media has brought the world instantly to them. Generation Y is a "techno-savvy" generation who has “seen” the world.
I found this source through Google scholar, I found it very interesting because it's yet another article that breaks down the topic of our generation Y mixing in with the past three generations of the work force. Based on this source I wanted to learn about the arguments and points our fellow Americans think about our generation Y joining the working world and lf we capable to run it. From here I could use this article many ways in my up and coming research paper. Because this article has many points on how each generation was gown up and how our difference might be for the better, thus bringing new idea's to working world. It also brings up many new idea's on how certain programs and seminars could help this big impact of generation Y into the workforce.

gen y blog 3

Blass, Eileen. "Generation Y: They've Arrived at Work with a New Attitude." USA Today May-June 2005.                This article is yet to be another big picture description of what generation Y is bring to the work force and how its our turn in time to run this country. There is no consensus over the exact birth dates that define Generation Y, also known by some as echo work, but they don't want work to be their life, states. (blass). I wanted to start off the summary of this paper with this quote because it is a good picture on how our generation is generalized.  The articles goes over on who generation Y is, they're young, smart, brash. They may wear flip-flops to the office or listen to iPods at their desk. We are a generation of  70 million Americans born 1977 to 2002. Generation X was born roughly 1965 to 1976. The article then goes over on what generation Y has to bring to the work force and what affects they will have on it. As they take their first jobs, Generation Y would be the fastest-growing segment of the workforce — growing from 14% of the workforce to 21% over the past four years to nearly 32 million workers (Blass). This shows how fast our generation Y is taking over the work force. Then the article goes into who we are as generation Y, the good aspects along with the poor aspects we bring to the table. Generation Y has high expectations of Themselves. When in the workplace they aim to work faster and better than other workers. From the employers generation Y wants fair and direct managers who are highly engaged in their professional development. They seek out creative challenges and view colleagues as vast resources from whom to gain knowledge. From day one they want to make an important impact on the business. They want small goals with tight deadlines so they can build up ownership of tasks. The author speaks about  how the generations that have gone before them, Generation Y has been pampered, nurtured and programmed with a laziness since they were toddlers, meaning they are both high-performance and high-maintenance. They also believe in their own worth. The author also goes into how generation Y is financially smart; today's newest entrants into the workforce are generally savvy
when it comes to money and savings. They care about such benefits as 401(k) retirement plans. It goes into how generation Y on how they have seen the money scandals in our coutry, and that they're skeptical when it comes to such concepts as employee loyalty. They don't like to stay too long on any one assignment. This is a generation of multitaskers, and they can juggle e-mail on their BlackBerrys while talking on cellphones while being online. It finally goes into how generation Y dress-codes concerning in the work place are changing. They think its ok to wear flip flops and t-shirts to work. This another point on how generation Y is changing the work force. Many may not like it which is why past generations are having trouble mixing in with the current generation.
There are many key topics that I thought to be very relevant to generation Y starting to take over Americas's new age work force. For instance, they seek out creative challenges and view colleagues as vast resources from whom to gain knowledge. This is key to have an successful work force and economy, because if a past generation doesn't want to learn from the past generations how are the going to learn and gain insights how how past generations made mistakes in certain areas and how they came to over come problems within there professions. Another key point of how generation Y from day one wants to make an important impact on the business. This is true because generation Y was born into a very high paced, competitive world from birth unlike the past generations. We want to be the best and want to rise to higher strengths because that's what we were taught begingining with early schooling to playing sports. Yet another strong point is generation Y has been pampered, nurtured and programmed with a laziness since they were toddlers, meaning they are both high-performance and high-maintenance. I thought this was important because it is true in most cases. We were brought pampered and programmed with laziness, but was that generation Y's fault? In some ways yes, but it was also brought on by numerous things such as: our parents, our country, electronics, call phones, computers, and many other things. Generation Y starting to take over the current work force in my mind is a blessing. Yes, its going to take work mixing in with the past generations rules in law's  but generation Y has so much to bring that past generations don't.
I choose this source because it was another very interesting article about how generation Y joining the american work force has many worried but also many exited for the aspects we have to bring to the table.  I wanted to learn more about older generations feelings about generation Y coming into the working world and what were the perks and the downfall of generation Y. From here I could write a research \ on the cost and bnifits of our generation Y joining today's work force

Eisner, Susan P. Managing Generation Y 70.4 (2005). Print
This article is about our generation Y, which analysis three main topics, how our generation is the "echo" boomers, the conflict of generations, and human resource management. With the entry of Generation Y to the working world, the workforce for the first time contains four generations. It covers the idea of how generation Y

are considered to be echo boomers, the internet technology junkies. The article

first starts off with and introduction of what the main focuses are and how we

relate to past generations. After reading the print I came to realize the main

topic of the essay is the conflict of generations. This paper, seeks to present

winning strategies for managing intergenerational implications of Gen Y's entrance

to the workplace  The writer first seeks to explain on how past generations are

having trouble being able to mix with generation Y. It describes the coexistence

of age-diverse workers in a transitioning workplace. Considering generation Y in

the work force the author talks about how in the they are considered to dislike

authoritarianism and laziness. The paper compares generation Y to generation X by

stating that gen X is the child workoholic of baby boomers. Also that generation X

tends not to have strong social skills like generation Y, but do have strong

technology skills. Generation X tends to be outcome-focused and seeks specific

constructive feed back unlike generation Y.

Generation Y is considered as the most technically literate, educated, and

ethnically diverse generation in history. Overall, Gen Y is inclined to be

positive, polite, curious, energetic, and respectful of its parents and

grandparents. Making a lot of money tends to be less important to Generation Y

than contributing to society, parenting well, and enjoying a full and balanced

life. The author states that a recent study found that Generation Y is consuming

31 hours of media in a 24 hour time frame through multi-tasking. This is true

because generation Y is used to a fast passed world with all technology and

information at hand 24/7.

In the work force, Generation Y tends to favor an inclusive style of

management, dislike slowness, and desire immediate feedback about performance.

Technically able, highly informed and confident, but lacking direction, Generation Y is more

likely to "rock the boat" than any prior generation. The write states Some of Generation Y's

characteristics may make it easier to manage than Generation X. Generation Y tends to value

teamwork and fairness and is likely to be more positive than Gen X on a range of workplace

issues including work-life balance, performance reviews. At the same time, Gen Y's entrance to

the workforce seems to present some challenges. Although Gen Y workers tend to be more

positive than Gen X about working in general, Gen Y tends to be less satisfied than Gen X with

their jobs and employers.  Compared with other generations, Generation Y tends to have less

respect for rank and more respect for ability and accomplishment.

Some key points that have good relation with this article is when the writer talks

about how other generations are have trouble working with generation Y. Because generation X

and generation Y are so much different than each other. Generation Y is considered to be very

sociable compared to generation X he did not grow up with all the "social" websites and did

not have cell phones or txting which keeps them in contact 24/7. Generation X does have a

better understand on what it means to want something and achieving it rather then generation Y

expecting everything to be given to them. I can relate to this because me being part of

generation Y we did have a way easier childhood than generation X did. We were born into a

world that has everything planned out for us. Another key point is how a recent study showed

how we are capable of 31 hours of information in a 24 hour time frame. This is possible

because we were born into a world of technology. In general most people in generation Y had a

cell phone and internet access from the age of ten years old. All of these things make a more

fast passed world which generation Y is accustomed to living in; compared to the past

generations that did not have these things.

I chose this article because it was very interesting how in depth it went on

generations stronge points and bad points concerning the work force. The writer did this very

well by comparing generation Y to generation X strong and weak points. I wanted to learn on

how our generation is doing joining a work force that is filled with the past 3 generations.

From here i could implicate these points of generation Y and generation X into my paper

because its a very indomitable subject concerning our countries generations. Also, that it is

very relevant because this is the time were most of our generation is joining our countries

work force.
